Wyoming Swimming Named Scholar All-America Team

Both men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have been named to the Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.  The award is for exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2020 Spring semester.  “Academics continue to be a top priority for the Wyoming swimming and diving program,” says Head Coach Dave Denniston.

Cowboy Joe Club Celebrates 50th Anniversary

While the celebration has not been able to go as planned due to the virus, the Cowboy Joe Club is in the midst of its 50th anniversary.  The founding fathers of the Club—Jim LaFleiche, Earl Madson, Frank Mendicino, Dick Scarlett, and Mike Schutte—got together back in the Fall of 1969 with the idea of creating a support group for Cowboy football and UW athletics. Lander, Riverton golfers top Wyoming Amateur Field

Lander’s Jaren Calkins won the Wyoming State Amateur Championship this past weekend at the Riverton Country Club with a one shot victory over Riverton’s Cameron Carter and Laramie’s Dan Starzinski. Calkins scored a three round total of 207 strokes. Riverton’s Parker Paxton was three strokes back in third place. Other local finishers were all from Riverton, including: Cory Olsen in 5th, and Jordan Costello in 8th.

Moss is Finalist for National Coach of the Year Honor

Shout out to Wyoming Indian High school girls head basketball coach Aleta Moss who was named as a National High School Athletic Coaches Association Basketball Coach of the Year Finalist this past week. Moss reached a milestone this past season with her 600th career win. Her Lady Chief teams have been in the state title game the last four years, winning the championship in back-to-back years 2019 and 2020.

Sheridan and Gillette College Cancel All Sports, except Rodeo

A news release from the Northern Wyoming Community College District yeterday reported that both Sheridan College and Gillette College have disbanded all of their sports programs, except Rodeo and that budget was reduced. According to the news release, coaches at both Gillette College and Sheridan College were let go Thursday, and the athletic director was fired Wednesday as a result of budget considerations. The release noted that some $500,000 was cut from both college’s administration budget and that the college’s police force budget was reduced by over $20,000. Yeradi honored by National Football Foundation

From Wyopreps.com Wright’s Dax Yeradi has received a select honor from the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). Yeradi is one of 82 members of the 2020 NFF Team of Distinction. There were over 3,500 scholar-athletes that were considered for this honor. According to a release from the NFF, as part of its mission to promote the scholar-athlete ideal, the initiative allows the NFF to honor the top high school scholar-athletes from around the country as the best and the brightest at the local level while highlighting the work of the NFF Chapter Network. Cowboy Football Academics hits a new high GPA

University of Wyoming Athletic Director Tom Burman is praising the “Great work by our Academic Staff, players, and coaches.” According to a Tweet sent out today, “the last 3 months has been tumultuous and the focus by staff and students deserves recognition. To our donors, this is an important reason why you support this program” # Burman was referring to Head Football Coach Craign Bohl’s statement that UW is “developing winners in the classroom, winners on the field and winners in life.” The Cowboys posted a spring semester GPA of 3.345, a new semester record for UW Football.

Lander Lobos capture Worland Tournament

The Lander Senior Babe Ruth Lobos captured the tournament in the Big Horn Basin over the weekend with a victory over Worland on Sunday. Ty Massey had the big arm for the Lobos, pitching a no-hitter in Saturday’s game 4-0 win over Worland and pitching all 7 innings in Landers 6-5 win Sunday, also against Worland.

Four to Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame

:The Wyoming Coaches Association has announced its 2020 Hall of Fame class. These four coaches will be enshrined along with the 2021 class next summer. Honored are John Hepp, Buffalo; Scott McKinzie, Powell; Brad Dekrey, Rock Springs; and Jason Humble, Kaycee. Raiders Take Two from Lovell Mustangs Monday

Riverton Raiders opened West conference play on KTAK-FM with a 4-2 Wyoming Department of American Legion win over the Lovell Mustangs Monday night at Roy Peck Field. Aquilo Friday went 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs, while Dillon Lange threw 100 pitches, scattered 8 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2 batters. Brock Hinkle went 2-2 with a double. The Raiders completed the sweep with a 6-5 walk-off win in the nightcap on a Blake Dale single. Raiders travel to Cody Wednesday for a 5 pm conference twin-bill.
