Emma Jean Ross

April 16th, 1930 – June 16, 2022

On June 16th, 2022, Emma Jean Ross passed away peacefully.  She was known to everyone as Jean, Mom, or Nanny.  Nanny was born April 16th, 1930 in Hazlehurst, Mississippi to Wilford Harville and Arcola Roberts Hodges.  She married Robert Francis Ross in 1947 and they had two children, (Robert) Dean and (Juanita) Gail.   They lived all over the country as her husband worked in the oil field and heavy iron construction industries.  They lived all over western Wyoming from the late 1940’s and usually returning  to southern Arkansas for the winters.   She was even in the great blizzard of 1949 in Riverton.  Her husband passed away in 1977 and Nanny moved back to Rock Springs, WY to be near Gail and her young family.  She worked at the Renegade Café until 1991.  She moved to Lander, WY in 1992 and worked in the kitchen at the Lander Hospital before retiring for good.

Nanny was known for her amazing cooking, tender heart, kind words and wanting to take care of everyone.  She was a very independent and strong woman, but always put her family first. She made everyone feel special when they were around her and long to visit with her again.

She is preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, multiple siblings and daughter.

She is survived by her family and friends that loved her dearly and cherish all the memories they shared over the years. Nanny had many siblings, but only two siblings are still living, her sister Josephine, “JoeB” in Houston, TX and little brother, John “Buddy” Barlow in Myrtle Point, Oregon.  She is also survived by her son Dean and his wife, Jean, of Aiken, SC, and son-in-law, Les Hill of Clarkston, WA. Nanny had four grandchildren – Duane and his wife Linett of Madison, AL, Cheri and husband Victor Arthun of Bozeman, MT, Jared of Ft. Collins, CO, and Jenny and husband Todd of Colorado City, CO. She has six great grandchildren — Hawk and wife Abigail, Cameron, Alana, Carson, Kennedy and Olivia.  She has two great-great grandchildren — Willow Ann and Hartley Lane.

Nanny’s wishes were for a private and small graveside service at Lander Valley Cemetery on June 22nd presided by Bonnie Deyo. Nanny’s family wishes to thank the amazing nurses, staff and friends at Westward Heights Care Center and Encompass Hospice for their endless kindness, excellent care, and love for our Nanny.  In lieu of flowers please mail a donation directly to: Westward Heights, 150 Caring Way, Lander, WY 82520 in honor of Nanny.
