Today is a Federal and State Holiday with all US Government, State Government, local government offices closed to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. across the nation and to observe Wyoming Equality Day locally. Financial institutions are also closed and there will be no mail delivery.
Celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, MLK Jr. Day honors the life and accomplishments of Dr. King, an influential civil rights leader recognized for advancing the civil rights of minorities through a campaign of civil disobedience.
Cheyenne schoolteacher Harriett Elizabeth “Liz” Byrd, Wyoming’s first black woman legislator, served in the Wyoming House and Senate from 1981-92. She concentrated on social justice issues, and nine times sponsored a bill to make Martin Luther King day a state holiday before it was finally adopted in 1990 as MLK,Jr/Wyoming Equality Day.
