Riverton man died in Billings SUV crash into canal

A Wyoming man who died after crashing his SUV into an irrigation ditch north of Billings on Thursday night as been identified.

Kenneth Crawford III, 28, from Riverton, Wyoming died of multiple blunt force trauma injures, according to Yellowstone County Deputy Coroner Rich Hoffman. 

He was pronounced dead early Friday after emergency response crews pulled the vehicle from the ditch north of the intersection of Bitterroot Drive and Dover Road, according to a crash narrative provided by the Montana Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 10:41 p.m.

The man had been northbound on Bitterroot Drive when he drove through the T-intersection with Dover Road, just north of city limits, according to the MHP report.

The SUV struck the embankment on the south side of the ditch and launched into the air, the report states, crashing into the opposite side of the ditch before becoming submerged in the water.

The top of the SUV was just visible above the water Thursday night as crews worked to pull it out. It was removed from the ditch at about 1:10 a.m.

The man had not been wearing his seat belt, according to the report. Drugs, alcohol and speed are all suspected as factors in the crash, according to MHP.

The Billings Fire Department, Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office and Billings Police Department also responded to the scene.
