LARAMIE, Wyo. – Third-year head coach Chad Callihan and the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will open the 2015 preseason with their first practice on Monday, Aug. 10th at 8:15 a.m., in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
“We are looking forward to getting back out on the court with our returners,” Callihan said. “It will also be fun welcoming in our newcomers and finally being able to train with them. We hope to build on some team qualities throughout preseason to prepare for that first match with Ohio State.”
The Cowgirls first practice will be from 8:15-10:15 a.m., on Monday morning. During the preseason, Wyoming will either hold one or two practices per day leading up to the annual Brown and Gold scrimmage that is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the UniWyo. The scrimmage will be free and open to the public.
Callihan welcomes back six players who had starting roles and three other letterwinners to this year’s team that finished the 2014 season 23-8 overall and 12-6 in the Mountain West. Of the returning players, senior Bridget Shanahan and junior Laura Beach were each named All-Mountain West selections for the first time last season. Shanahan and Beach will be joined by veterans in seniors Kayla Henderson and Allison Waldvogel as well as juniors Courtney Chacon and Kayla Slofkiss. In all, the Cowgirls consist of three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and seven freshmen.
The Cowgirls will open the year hosting the Rumble of the Rockies, Aug. 28-29, with competition against Ohio State, South Dakota and Butler. Ohio State made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, and finished 13th and 20th in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and 2014 NCAA rankings, respectively. The following weekend Wyoming will travel to the Gonzaga Invitational, Sept. 4-5 and then host Pistol Pete’s Showdown: Presented by UniWyo Federal Credit Union, Sept. 11-12, where UW will welcome three teams that made last year’s NCAA tournament in Marquette, Kansas and Northern Colorado. The final tune-up before MW play is the Wyoming Invite, Sept. 17-18, as Idaho State, McNeese State and Pepperdine come to Laramie.
The first weekend of MW matches will be at home on Thursday, Sept. 24 against Boise State and against Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 26. The final regular season matchup at home for the Cowgirls will be against Border War rival Colorado State on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
